Looking south to rear of upper cenaculum/terrace, and rooms below. The atrium is the lower part of the photo.
When found, the atrium was completely empty of plaster in all its vast space.
The west and east walls were continuous, other than for a doorway in the east wall opening in the north-east corner.
Here was the wooden stairway rising to the upper floor, no less than 6.50m long by a height of 5m, roughly.
In the north wall were two doorways.
The one on the west side leading to a long and narrow room (not less than 6 x 3m) with a doorway penetrating under the upper rear rooms of IX.12.1, leading west into a short passageway. The one on the east side, another vast rectangular room (6.50 x 3.60m) and at its rear leading to a narrow room (less than 1.50 by around 10.70m), perhaps unroofed and giving light to the room and passageway.
